The Texas Board of Nursing (BON) is the government agency that has jurisdiction to hear and decide administrative cases involving RN and LVN in Texas. It is also the agency that is responsible for overseeing the practice of professional nursing all over the state of Texas. Subsequently, when EMS arrived two hours later, the patient was found with a blood glucose level of 37 mg/dl and blood pressure of 29/29 mm/Hg, was transferred to the hospital and expired later that day.
The RN’s conduct resulted in a delay of potentially life-saving intervention and may have contributed to the patient’s subsequent demise.
During the defense, she states the patient was feeling weak with a poor appetite and was found unresponsive later that morning. She then checked the patient’s blood glucose, found that it was low, called EMS, and assisted the patient back to her bed.
Because of this, the LVN was summoned by the Texas Board of Nursing. The RN further states the only time she left the patient was when gathering the necessary information for EMS during which, another nurse was present with the patient. She called the MD, who did not answer and had to leave a message detailing the patient’s condition. The RN further states the patient was not showing any other signs or symptoms of distress earlier that morning.
Although the LVN admit the offense she made, the lack of evidence and expert nurse attorney to defend her led to the Board of Nursing decision to suspend and discipline her license.
