On or about February 10, 2017, an RN from Houston initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including at least three chest compressions, for a patient, who was found unresponsive and without a pulse. Then, the RN left the patient to call for emergency medical staff, at which time CPR was re-initiated. Her conduct resulted in a disruption in emergency treatment for the patient.
In response to the complaints filed against her, the RN states that when she entered the room to do wound care, another inmate informed her that there might be a problem with the patient, so she checked the patient’s radial and carotid pulse. She states that she felt no pulse, and then placed her hand on the patient’s chest to check for rising and fall movement, and there was none.
The RN states that she gave the patient three chest compressions, then turned to call for help and saw one of the corrections officers standing in the area. The RN states that she asked her to call for an emergency, but the officer just stood there asking why she needed to call for an emergency, so she dashed out of the room screaming for help.
The RN further adds that she did not have time to tell the officer why she needed help. She states that another nurse and medical assistant heard her and came to help, at which time CPR was started and the patient was taken to the clinic.
However, the RN failed to hire a nurse attorney to help her with her case. Because of this, the Texas Board of Nursing suspended and disciplined the RN.
