Any patient can file a complaint against a nurse for being disrespectful, which is why nurses need to hire a good nurse attorney if they have a good defense against the case. But nurses such as this RN from Houston failed to hire one for the case that eventually led to her suspension despite her defense.
The incident occurred on or February 12, 2017, when the RN was accused of conducting disrespectful behavior towards a patient. The patient and RN’s verbal disagreement escalated into a physical altercation. The report states that the RN grabbed the patient by his shirt, and was forced into the floor.
The resulting action might have caused further injury or adverse effects to the patient. Furthermore, it could result in emotional and psychological harm which may lose the patient’s trust in the hospital. It could also result in delayed and disrupted treatment to the patient.
The Texas Board of Nursing then advised the RN to attend a hearing to defend against the case. She stated that she provided an emesis bag. Suddenly, the patient turned belligerent before the RN left the place.
The RN asked for the bag if the patient needs it, but the patient placed the bag behind him while sitting on his bunk. The RN reached for the bag and unintentionally grabbed his shirt. The patient threw the bag as a result and advised the RN to pick it up “like a dog”.
The RN removed herself from the patient’s area as a result. This defense could have been better if the RN hired a nurse attorney. Unfortunately, she was not able to, resulting for the Board to suspend her RN license so then she can learn from her actions in order to perform better in the future.
