On or about August 25, 1999, while employed in a hospital in Fort Worth, the RN inadvertently administered Clonidine (an anti-hypertensive) two-tenths milligram (2mg) to a patient who was admitted for the treatment of Crohn’s disease. The physician ordered Klonopin (a benzodiazepine) two (2) milligrams (mg) to be given to the patient.
The RN’s action of administering Clonidine unnecessarily exposed the patient to the risk of adverse effects from the medication, including hypotension, bradycardia, and dizziness.
During April 1999, while employed with Harris Methodist Fort Worth, Fort Worth, Texas, the RN failed to administer morphine sulfate for the Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pump for the patient, as ordered by the physician.
The RN signed out Demerol for the Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pump and administered the medication over a three (3) hour period to the aforementioned patient. Her action of administering the Demerol unnecessarily exposed the patient to the risk of harm from adverse effects of the medication, including sedation and hypotension.
On or about September 29, 1999, the RN failed to administer albumin intravenously (IV) as ordered by the physician to a patient who was admitted for a left septic knee and left thigh wound infection. The patient had a decreased serum albumin level. Her failure to administer albumin unnecessarily exposed the patient to a delay in healing.
The Texas Board of Nursing sent a letter to the RN regarding the issue so then she can have the chance to defend herself. However, she was not able to provide a good defense for herself. Therefore, the Board placed her RN license to a disciplinary action instead.
